San Diego  2011

Once again hooking up with the Legends and Heroes of Motocross tour I was heading to what used to be called Jack Murphy Stadium.  I am integrating my motocross endeavor with the off road world by getting my recognitions to one of the truly Extreme Pioneers of the Score Baja Races.  I met David Van Ness at a friends’ ranch up in Templeton and discovered that I knew his cousin, the Legendary Steve McKinney, so we hit it off from the start.  Dave not only participated and did well in the Score races he was an integral part of the early mapping of the Baja Peninsula.  So when I knew that I would be in his neighborhood I contacted him to get it done.

It was a cloudy night before the event and kind of sprinkled during the day a couple of times.  The Legends and Heroes exhibit was busy as usual with all kinds of people checking out the growing exhibit.  I did not do any of my recognitions at the event although I did line up some more people to be recognized.  I did not get to see much of the races but the racing I was able to catch was, as usual, good and fun to watch.

I headed over to Daves place and crashed in an RV listening to the rain pounding on the roof and thinking how lucky it was that all of that water waited until after the races to pour.  The following morning I presented Dave with his recognition and we got a little caught up.  He is a master boat and off road vehicle builder as well as restorer among a host of many talents.  His project at the time was an Airstream travel trailer that was stripped down to the shell ready for a rebuild.  We had some Coffee and toast and I was back on the road.  Pretty Cool Weekend!!!
