I am going to Glen Helen once again to help with the Legends and Heroes during this year’s USGP. I found everyone quickly and went to the display. I knew there would be more spectators this time around but was still disappointed by the numbers. Back in the day this was the event we all were looking forward to see. Maybe there was more of the USA vs the World back then because in the beginning we were the underdog. I really missed this event over the years because we never got to witness the speed of many of the world’s greatest riders. Some of them did race over here but the likes of Stephan Everts we never saw stateside. Bummer.
I was able to check out some of the racing but most of the day was at the display or going through the pits to see if I could find Harry Everts and confirm that he had indeed received my thank you and recognition I left with the French gal in his pits at the MXDN last year.
I thought the day was a wash as far as my Extreme Sport Pioneer Awards were concerned but when I returned to the Legends display I found Malcolm Smith checking out my DKW. I went to my box of recognitions and found his and quickly went to present it to him. He was very gracious and thanked me for the recognition. For all that he has done for our sport I needed to thank him. We talked about how important the Sachs DKWs were back then and that he might like one for the shop. “I’ll see what I can do” and told him that Chuck Daly had been restoring a few of them.
About that time Stephan Everts came into our area and as I walked over to him he noticed the awards in my hand and told me that his dad had given him the one from me after the MXDN. He thanked me and then I told him the story of talking with his dad at last year’s event which led to Harry getting reconnected with Ted Lapidakis and eventually Senor Puch. It is a small world. And then Stephan was off to sign the wall of fame in the Legends travelling museum. Pretty cool stuff!!!
